Bite of the Week: Antidote Strawberry Milk Chocolate Bar

When Antidote founder Red Thalhammer was feeling down, she wished for a cure-all chocolate pill to ease her woes. Fortunately for us, she decided to make something of her own. She created Antidote as her line of “serious chocolate,” not in a somber way, but as a dedication to seriously quality products—with a little emphasis on the health benefits of chocolate. By mixing raw and roasted cacao, Antidote brings an innovative and flavorful palate to the table, and by keeping a low sugar content, the focus is all on the star ingredients.

Antidote Big Kid Strawberry Milk Bar

What’s a playful chocoholic to do with a serious chocolate? Try the Big Kid line, of course. Antidote’s newest collection brings an accessible sophistication to the typically more junior choice: milk chocolate. Bars have all the creativity and impact you want from any chocolate, but also have a more mature feel than your standard drugstore milk chocolate. Antidote describes its Big Kid options as “low sugar, fuller flavor, for the kid in you.”

We’re loving the Antidote Strawberry Milk Chocolate Bar, a 56% milk chocolate with real strawberries and hibiscus. To be honest, when I first heard the name, I thought of the artificially enhanced strawberry milk cartons of my cafeteria days in elementary school. (Remember mixing bright-red strawberry syrup into skim milk for an at-home DIY?) Fortunately, this bar is far and away from that childhood treat. Instead of saccharine strawberry flavoring, Antidote features real chopped strawberry pieces, which are impressively flavorful and subtle at the same time. They bring a bright berry angle without taking attention away from the pure, creamy chocolate. Every bite starts off mellow, but melts into a sensation that is simultaneously sweet, milky, rich, smooth, and oh-so-good. It’s the perfect confection for any age and any taste.
