Bite of the Week: Chocolat Moderne NYC Milk Street Nuts Bar

Chocolat Moderne believes that “chocolate will always be in style—especially luxe gourmet chocolate.” Inventive flavors combine high-quality French Valrhona chocolate with unique mix-ins. Founder Joan Coukos drew from a multi-dimensional background of international studies, an MBA from UNC-Chapel Hill, extensive European travel, and a banking career to build a one-of-a-kind business. After studying Old World chocolatiers in Brussels, she concocted new bites in her Manhattan apartment before starting the company in 2003. Ten years later, she earned a spot on Dessert Professional Magazine's Top Ten Chocolatiers of North America.

While flavors span from Moderne to Avant-Garde, one of the flagship bars is the Chocolat Moderne NYC Milk Street Nuts bar. Anyone that has spent time in New York City knows the classic hot nuts carts on every corner. Chocolat Moderne takes that inspiration and puts a sophisticated take on the street-corner tradition.

The 35% cacao chocolate is creamy, rich, and smooth, without ever overpowering the nuts. Caramelized cashews, almonds, and peanuts bring an incredible butterscotch flavor for elegant sweetness. It’s salty and sweet without being too much of either. My favorite bites are half chocolate, half nuts, but the balance skews towards chocolate, so I wish there were more! This is the grown-up version of the ever-popular peanut butter and chocolate combination. Try it on an innovative cheese platter or eat it plain.
